Rebuilding the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge

Most of the work thus far has focused on the $1 billion skyway, a 1.2-mi. stretch that features a side-by-side deck gradually rising up from the Oakland side of San Francisco Bay to Yerba Buena Island. Caltrans said the new bridge should open in late 2009 or early 2010.

A $47 million nanotechnology research laboratory is being built by on a tricky hillside on the UC Berkeley campus. Low-tolerance thresholds for vibrating equipment, acoustics and electromagnetic interference are in play for the six-story, 95,000-sq.-ft. building.

Quicker Commute

Completion of a 14-mi.-long landscaped busway in the San Fernando Valley is still on schedule despite a 28-day delay caused by remediation of contaminated soil. The $330 million busway, called the Orange Line, will cross 33 intersections in the densely populated area north of downtown Los Angeles.

New Building Blooms in City Heights

The $20 million Metro Career Center was painted with rich colors to blend with other structures in the multicultural section of east San Diego. The offices are occupied by the San Diego Workforce Partnership, a non-profit organization that helps connect people with jobs and training.
